What Are The Starch-Containing Foods?

Starch is the building blocks of sugar. Studies show that starch is white, odorless, tasteless carbohydrate powder soluble in cold water. In this project, we will know more about starch. Starch plays a vital role in the biochemistry of both plants and animals. It is made in green plants by photosynthesis, and is one of the main forms in which plants store food.

PROBLEM

What kinds of food contain starch?

HYPOTHESIS

Starch is a substance in most fruits and vegetables, which means that it is most likely in the vegetable and fruit samples. Since starch is an inexpensive and widely available food product, it is being used as a food additive in many food products.

MATERIALS

  • rice
  • potatoes
  • apples
  • milk
  • yogurt
  • macaroni
  • iodine solution

PROCEDURE

  1. Prepare the six samples.
  2. Crush the wet samples.
  3. Filter the solution to get a clear liquid.
  4. One by one, the clear liquid samples will be dropped with an iodine solution.
  5. If the dropped area of the sample will change color to dark blue, then a starch is present on the sample.
  6. Record the results.

RESULTS / ANALYSIS OF DATA

Based on the recorded results, the sample which contained starch can be identified.
